By Molly Stark Dean
Molly Stark Dean is a New York–based journalist and educator involved with Women Do News, and is on the Board of Directors for Wikimedia New York City.

I wrote a poem about my love for Wikipedia.

I wanted to read this poem at Wikipedia Day 2026 in New York, but WikiNYC had a snow day and delayed the event.

First, they came for the politicians

And I did not speak out

Because I do not belong to a party

Then they came for disabled journalists

And I did not speak out

Because my disability is invisible

Then they came for the teachers

And I did not speak out

Because I was not smart enough

Then they came for the white women

And I did not speak out

Because newsrooms would notice

Then they came for Wikipedia

And I yelled out

Because Wikimedians are my people

Then they tried to come for me

And there was no one left to recruit

To come for my community

thank you

@Mollystarkdean: It's nice to see somebody take the bull by the horns and just say what's needed to be said. Do you want to write a poetry column for The Signpost? IMHO poetry doesn't need to be beautiful or even rhyme, but saying what needs to be said is priceless. Smallbones(smalltalk) Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:59, 17 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a journalist. I haven't written poetry since high school. This is the only time a poem has come to me since then because of our current situation in America. I do want to write here. Maybe more poetry? Molly Stark Dean #NewsNerd (talk) 18:04, 17 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I hope we hear this from your lips, Molly, on March 28 Jim.henderson (talk) 05:46, 20 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely beautiful

I know the poem this was inspired by, (which is one of my favorite poems), and this was beautiful. You should definitely continue writing poetry. TheClocksAlwaysTurn (The Clockworks) (contribs) 15:02, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. This parody poem is the height of my creativity. Calvin Trilin is my favorite poet. This was a cathartic practice in poetry parody. Molly Stark Dean #NewsNerd (talk) 18:49, 25 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Powerful poem
