Wikipedia contributor Antonio "Tony the Marine " Santiago is profiled in a Wikimedia Blog post . According to the post, "...Puerto Rican Secretary of State Kenneth D. McClintock called Santiago the Commonwealth’s foremost military historian." Santiago said, “As a father and a grandfather, I can appreciate that for the first time in history there’s somewhere providing children around the world with the tools of knowledge, allowing them the opportunity to use what they have learned to make this a better world.”
This year's Wiki Loves Monuments event in Syria had an unusual situation because of the potential damage to monuments during the country's civil war . According to a post in the Wikimedia Blog , "Damascus, Aleppo, and Homs are among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world... There are buildings, churches, theaters, and gates that date back to the second century." This photo shows the dome of Khan As’ad Pasha in the Old City of Damascus . Over 1,000 photos were uploaded from Syria during Wiki Loves Monuments 2013. A commentator on the blog post wrote, "These places have a soul that have been silenced by the cannons hope one day the world conscience silence the guns and those cities come back to life again".
